These panels are a continuation of my material exploration of aluminum.

They begin as sheets of paper which I lay flat and brush an industrial product containing aluminum paint onto. The oil from the paint separates and seeps into the other side of the page. I can’t control this leakage; I follow the subtle patterns on the opposite side, like a nonsensical game of checkers or chess. They are then cut out, overturned, and adhered to the face of custom made poplar and plywood panels. Once assembled and affixed to the panels, nickel tacks are added along the borders, not interrupting the cut out elements, instead adding a sense of adornment and another layer of organization.

A continuation of an ongoing series that began during my show Stretch Under Strain from early 2024 at Blade Study. The chestnut reoccurs in my work and has held close personal importance to me since the time I spent with my grandfather when I was young. With these panel pieces, I’ve adopted an image of a personified chestnut and used it as a symbol that can be morphed and distorted. The background of these wooden panels are matte black gesso, with aluminum paint and a graphite drawing laid overtop.

The drawings with buildings and suns are inspired by Shaker map drawings, which were done to lay out the towns that they inhabited. I was initially attracted to the cartographical precision with which the Shakers executed these drawings, and the simple and efficient ordering principles they display.

The drawings are made with watercolor and graphite and usually isolate one building or small group of buildings, like a portrait taken next to the sun. Each building is saturated with sunshine in a way a plant may turn itself towards the light in order to soak up as much energy as it can.
